Pixie League (K-1) Rules

  1. Pixie League Objectives
    1. Introduce girls to the basic rules of Softball.
    2. Maximize player development of fundamentals.
    3. Keep the game moving at a decent pace.
    4. Make the environment positive and fun.
    5. Leave as many girls as possible wanting to return to play the following season.
  2. Game Start
    1. Game start times are determined by the Master Pixie Schedule.
    2. The game may be delayed for up to fifteen (15) minutes to await the arrival of additional players to satisfy the minimum player requirement, which is five (5) players.  Catcher is not required.
  3. Forfeits – Any team that cannot field the minimum five (5) players within the fifteen (15) minutes of the designated game start time shall forfeit the game for official purposes.  Teams shall proceed with an unofficial game and may “loan” players to the team that is short in order to create a better experience.  All other rules shall remain in effect for the unofficial game.
  4. Game Length
    1. The official game length shall be three (3) complete innings with each girl batting once per inning.
    2. Except as provided in 4i, 4ii, and 4ii below, a game shall be terminated and considered official under the earliest to occur:
      1. Time Limit – No new inning may start after 75 minutes.  The home team keeps time. No Drop Dead Rule.
      2. Inclement Weather Rule – In the event of inclement weather, a game shall be considered official after 2 complete innings. Games that are cancelled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled except when considered official or when precluded by season or post season schedule limitations or time/field limitations.  Coaches shall agree to terminate a game when the conditions of play (for example, rain, hail, field conditions) unreasonably place any player or other person at risk of injury.
      3. Games shall be immediately terminated at the siting of lighting by either coach or parents.
      4. Darkness Rule – In the event of a game being called because of darkness (as agreed upon by the coaches) the game shall be official after 2 complete innings.
  5. Distance of pitching rubber and bases
    1. The pitching rubber shall be thirty-five (35) feet from home plate (coach pitch is focused on getting the girls to hit and coaches can agree to stand closer in order to get the hitter to hit).
    2. Bases shall be sixty (60) feet apart.
  6. Number of players
    1. Throughout the duration of a game when batting or in the field, a team must have a minimum of five (5) players (inclusive of pitcher or player at the pitcher position).
    2. If possible, a team should field ten (10) players. If both coaches agree, additional players may be placed on the field.
    3. A team shall use up to a maximum of six (6) infielders (inclusive of a pitcher and a catcher) and four (4) outfielders (unless more outfielders are mutually agreed upon).
  7. Infield fly rule – not in effect.
  8. Dropped 3rd strike – not in effect.
  9. Stealing and Sliding
    1. Stealing is NOT permitted.
    2. Sliding is permitted (feet first only). It is recommended that a player not engage in sliding until such time as they have received certification in sliding technique by AGSA.  AGSA certification in sliding can be achieved by an entire team taking the AGSA approved sliding clinic.  Any team desiring to achieve certification in sliding should contact the Pixie Commissioner who will set up the clinic.
    3. Leading off is not permitted.
  10. Pitching
    1. All Pixie Kindergarten teams will use a combination of the T and coach pitch. (Coaches will have a conversation before each game as to the understanding of pitcher distance and number of pitches given to the hitter).  General rules are:
    2. Hitting off the T:
      1. When batting from the T, girls will swing until they get a hit.  (A hit is any ball that lands in fair territory.)
    3. For coach pitch:
      1. Coach should begin with plant foot no further forward than the pitcher circle (27 feet – 8 feet in front of the rubber).  As players improve, Coach is encouraged to move back towards the rubber.
      2. Coach will pitch four (4) good pitches.  If player gets a hit, she runs to first base and next batter is up.  If a hitter does not hit during these 4 pitches, player must hit from the T. The exception to this rule is when the last good pitch results in a foul ball, the batter may take another pitch (e.g., don’t put them on the T right after making contact with the ball).       3. Player cannot strike out (swinging or otherwise) or foul out.
  11. Strike Zone – Pitching coach shall decide when four (4) decent pitches have been attained (within reason).
  12. Batting Order
    1. Every player shall be included in the batting order.  Late arriving players shall be placed at the end of the batting order.  Each player shall bat each inning.
  13. Offense
    1. Players should bat in the batting order shared by her coach with the opposing coach.
    2. Players shall bat in a continuous (snake) batting order.
    3. A batter must bat within the batter’s box.
    4. A batter shall not throw the bat. The player’s coach shall instruct the player to not throw the bat. At the start of the game, coaches should discuss the fielding of catchers with safety being the primary factor in choosing to do so. (If you have a player that wants to catch, by all means encourage it, but please do talk to the other coach to find out if there are any kids still working on proper bat release and be cognizant of not only your catcher's physical safety but also their having a positive experience.)
    5. It is the duty of the batter to avoid being hit by a pitch.  No batter shall be awarded a base for being hit by a pitch.
    6. No batter shall be awarded a base on balls.
    7. A base runner may overrun 1st base only.  All other bases, the runner may be tagged out. If they are off the base, though they can stay on the base and continue playing in the next play.
    8. A batter may take only one base on a hit that stays in the infield but may take one (1) extra base if the hit leaves the infield.
    9. One base runner may not pass another base runner that is ahead of them.
    10. Overthrows – applies to a thrown ball that was in possession of an infielder and thrown to another fielder.  This applies to throws to 1st, 2nd, 3rd the pitcher, and home plate.  An overthrow is considered a dead ball and the runners shall not advance.
    11. An inning is over when all batters on the team have batted.
    12. Coaches should agree at the start of the game to call base runners out if a play is made at any base.  In this case, the base coaches are solely responsible for making the base calls.  The coach pitcher will make the call at home plate.
  14. Defense
    1. If a coach decides that he will only play some of the girls on the team in the field at one time then every player must play at least one (1) inning in the field
    2. Coaches are encouraged to play all players every inning in the field and to play all players at different positions.
    3. The designated outfielders must be on the edge of the outfield grass when the ball crosses home plate.  If there is not any grass, then the players should be along an invisible arc which starts ten (10) feet behind first base, continues ten (10) feet behind second base and ends ten (10) feet behind third base.
  15. Home Team – The home team shall use the dugout along first base line.
  16. Game Rainouts – See 4bii above.
  17. Player Safety Gear
    1. All players in the field must be wearing a glove.
    2. The catcher must wear full protective equipment (to include shin guards, chest protector, catcher’s helmet/mask).
    3. A batter or player on base must wear a NOCSAE approved helmet with facemask and chin strap.
    4. All infielders are encouraged to use a mouth guard or other protective mouthpiece.
  18. Ball Specifications
    1. All Pixie games will use the 11” Easton Incrediball (softiball).
  19. Obstruction
    1. The base runner unequivocally owns the baseline.
    2. A defensive player cannot intentionally block any baseline, base, or home plate unless she is in possession of the ball.
    3. A defensive player must get out of the way of the runner unless she is fielding a hit ball or she is drawn into the baseline or path of the runner by the act of actually receiving a throw at a base/plate (that does not mean anticipating or waiting for a throw to be made).
    4. If the defensive player is actually receiving a throw at a base/plate, the base runner must avoid contact with the defensive player.  If the runner goes into the base standing and causes serious contact with the fielder, the umpire may call the runner out.
    5. Some collisions may be unavoidable.  Use good judgment and make every effort to avoid collisions. A base runner that is perceived by the base coaches to have intentionally “run over” another player shall be called out and possible ejected from the game based upon coaches discretion.
  20. Interference
    1. A base runner must avoid contact with any hit ball and the defensive player attempting to field the ball.  The runner may run out of the baseline to avoid contact with the defensive player fielding a hit ball or a defensive player that is drawn into their path or the baseline by any act of actually receiving a throw.  A base runner may not run out of the baseline to avoid a tag.  A better must get out of the way of the catcher if any play is being made at home plate.  If the batter interferes with the catcher’s ability to field a hit ball, receive a throw, or otherwise make a play at home plate, the batter may be called out and/or the runner advancing to home plate returned to 3rd base (both of which are at the discretion of the defensive coach).
  21. Coaches and other individuals
    1. Offense – Other than the designated coach pitcher at the appropriate times and 1st and 3rd base coaches, no coach may be on the playing field or on the sidelines whether along the infield or outfield.
    2. Defense – The defensive team is allowed a maximum of 3 coaches on the field.
    3. It shall be the responsibility of the coach to immediately report any incidents to the Pixie Commissioner.
    4. It shall be the responsibility of the coach to challenge their players, other coaches and player’s parents to achieve the highest standards of sportsmanlike conduct.
  22. There are no playoffs for the Pixie League.
  23. The Pixie Commissioner reserves the right to add to, amend, change, modify and/or clarify the above rules during the course of the season.  Any such amendments, changes, modifications and/or clarifications shall have prospective effect and shall not be retroactively applied.
  24. The effective date of the above rules is March 1, 2015.
